Weather Balloons Utilized to Illegally Transport Tobacco Products Closed Lithuanian Airport
Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
