Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.
We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.
A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, weaving in elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in Together never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can experience today.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
